Two environmental groups say Westland Development Co. Inc.'s plan to build a 135-acre golf course on a 550-acre parcel north of Interstate 40 and west of Unser Boulevard will use too much city water.

Today at 5 p.m., the city Land Use Planning and Zoning Committee will hear an appeal of the Environmental Planning Commission's July approval of a subdivision plan for the 550-acre project.

The appeal was brought by the Water Information Network, a regional environmental group coordinated by Jaime Chavez, an heir to the Atrisco Land Grant from which Westland was formed and a stockholder in the company.

Chavez and a representative from the Southwest Research and Information Center said they have concerns about city water being used to irrigate the golf course and to supply water for the subdivision. …
