Don Perkins stands before a small audience, 20 or so, about half of which squirms in the laps of the other half. The rest vary from paying attention to the commanding presence in front of them to wandering past the shelves of books in the Barnes & Noble bookstore on the West Side.

Perkins is accustomed to audiences. For more than five years, he has done a one-man show as Civil War abolitionist Frederick Douglass. As a young man, he performed before hundreds of thousands, though they didn't come to hear him read.

Perkins is introduced and his audience is told he works as a crime prevention specialist with Albuquerque Police Department community service programs. …
