The District Attorney's Office did the right thing in dismissing adult charges against a teen who, at the age of 15, gave birth unassisted in her home and did not seek help that might have kept the baby alive.

Crystal Gebler could have received up to 18 years in prison had she been convicted of the state's original charges intentionally caused child abuse resulting in death, or alternative similar charges for which she could have been sentenced as an adult.

Last week, the 16-year-old pleaded no contest to a charge for which she now faces up to five years in a juvenile facility (until she turns 21) and/or state supervision.

Gebler's parents said they did not know their daughter had given birth, or even that she had been pregnant, when they rushed her to a hospital Jan. …
