Water Worries Force City Landfill Move.(New Mexico)

DEMING The Deming city landfill will be forced to shut down due to new environmental regulations.

Officials at the state Solid Waste Bureau in Santa Fe said the landfill has come as close as 50 feet from area ground water.

A minimum of 100 feet is required before permitting can be renewed, said Butch Tongate, Solid Waste Bureau chief. Ground-water contamination has not yet been detected at the Deming municipal landfill, Tongate added.

Plans are in the works to construct a new landfill 23 miles east of Deming, city officials said. …
