Four Area Teams Lose in Close Games

Five weeks old, the 2000 high school football season roared to life over the weekend.

And just in time.

There were four games decided by a total of 13 points in a series of thrilling games and finishes.

St. Pius was the only area team involved in a close game that won. West Mesa, Bernalillo, Valley and Rio Rancho suffered narrow defeats.

Surprisingly, it was previously 3-0 Cibola that was dealt the biggest loss, a 28-14 setback to Manzano on Saturday afternoon.

Rio Rancho (2-2) very nearly recovered from a 23-point fourth-quarter deficit on Saturday at Piedra Vista, but the Rams missed two 2-point opportunities including one in the waning moments and lost a 37-35 nail-biter. …
