Chance With Padres Set Back.(Sports)

While the San Diego Padres embark on the final week of the 2000 baseball season, one of the organization's most important young assets is rehabilitating in Rio Rancho.

John Roskos, a 1993 Cibola High graduate, wasn't promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas around Labor Day but only because the Padres felt Roskos should rest, strengthen and heal his injured left elbow in order to be ready for 2001.

"(The pain) started in spring training. I swung at a pitch that was away and it started bothering me," Roskos said Monday from his Rio Rancho home. "I played through it the whole year, and at the end of the season, it just gave up."

The injury wrecked his chance of spending the month of September with the Padres. He was prepared to go to San Diego, but in Las Vegas' final game, in his final at-bat, he said he "tweaked" the elbow again, and the Padres felt it would be safer for Roskos to sit out the remainder of the year. …
