LAS CRUCES A field of 23 candidates has been certified for the Oct. 3 primary election for the Mescalero Apache Tribal Council.

The eight candidates with the highest vote totals will gain spots on the ballot for the Nov. 7 election, when voters will choose four council members.

Three of the four incumbents are seeking re-election: Arthur Blazer, the council treasurer; Harlyn Geronimo; and Glenda Brusuelas. A fourth incumbent, Dorlyn Simmons, is not seeking another term.

Other candidates include former tribal vice president Oliver Enjady, former presidential candidate Freddie Peso, former council member Larry Shosh and former presidential candidate Carleton Palmer, a frequent critic of the administration of Tribal President Sara Misquez. …
