Throw out the fact that their 7-3 record through Saturday was among the best in the state in girls' Class A-AAA prep soccer.

Forget for a moment that the ambitious realignment plan implemented by the New Mexico Activities Association this summer has left them as one of the prohibitive favorites to win the state title this season.

Excuse the idea that they are a team that head coach Ed Velie describes as "one of the best" in his seven years with the school.

Maybe the most important thing to remember about the St. Michael's girls soccer team is its cumulative grade-point average of 3.7 entering the fall semester.

The Lady Horsemen, whose 15 players nearly averaged a straight-A report card coming into the season, are one of the reasons why Velie says the phrase, "I'll take brains over brawn any day," is a nonissue when referring to this season's team. …
