Department Wants Landscaping Limits

The Santa Fe Fire Department is urging new fire restrictions to minimize damage in case of a fire like the one that swept through Los Alamos in May.

The department wants the county to adopt an ordinance which would ban most wooden exterior building materials and restrict landscaping in populated areas adjacent to forests and heavy vegetation.

The ordinance is called the Santa Fe Urban Wildland Interface Code.

"The intention is to prevent another Cerro Grande/Los Alamos disaster," said Santa Fe County Fire Chief Stan Holden.

Under the proposed ordinance, violators would face fines of up to $300 and or 90 days in jail. …
