R. Michael Kammerer more or less refuses to talk about himself.

Heroes let their actions speak for themselves, he said, and settles further into his office's velvety couch, accidentally knocking his white Stetson onto the floor.

This much we know: Kammerer grew up in New York, poor by his own admission. He made something of a fortune starting New York City's Independent Television Network Inc. His heroes have always been cowboys.

Kammerer moved West in the early 1990s and fell in love both with the land and what he calls "the Code of the West," a loose-knit ethical doctrine of hard work and steady handshakes. …
