Defense Bill Aims To Centralize Work

House and Senate negotiators have agreed on a provision in a defense funding bill that would focus the military's energy weapon research at a single location very likely Kirtland Air Force Base.

The 2001 Defense Authorization Bill to be sent to President Clinton will order the military to execute the "High Energy Laser Master Plan," a report issued to Congress in March at the request of Sen. Jeff Bingaman, D-N.M., a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The Pentagon report says lasers and other "directed energy" weapons might be the best way for the United States to maintain its technological superiority over a world increasingly filled with weapons of mass destruction and long-range missiles. …
