Cold Case Detectives Fire Up Back Burner.(Editorial Page)


Murder is serious business, but as with most business, investigators of serious crimes resort to triage. Limited time and manpower gets devoted to cases with the greatest prospects for results. Older crimes where the trail has grown cold or the cul-de-sacs have grown too numerous slide into the inactive files.

An Albuquerque Police Department team formed in the summer of 1999 is pulling those cases back and running down years-old trails trying to pick up the scent of evidence.

Two retired detectives were sort of inactive themselves until APD Chief Jerry Galvin put them back on the roster part-time to investigate old homicides.

The national average for solving homicides is about 67 percent. …
