Estancia Runners Stumble in Opener.(Sports)

The Estancia High boys varsity cross country team finally started its season Saturday.

Well, sort of. In a performance deemed "horrible" by Estancia head coach Roger Kennedy, the Bears placed seventh out of 10 teams in the Native American Prep School Invitational.

"Before you can take a step forward, sometimes you have to take a step back," said Kennedy. "The boys learned a lesson. They all thought they should have run better."

Estancia's top runner, Franklin Hirrill, suffered a severe muscle cramp in his calf and struggled to the finish line 43rd out of 45 runners.
