Estancia Drops 1st Game of Season by a Point.(Sports)

Football Team's Drive Ends at 28-27 Loss

TULAROSA Running back Mike Mendez took an option pitch and rambled 38 yards around the left side on Estancia High's first play from scrimmage Friday night.

Most observers especially those who had watched the explosive Bears outscore their first three opponents of the football season by the tidal wave total of 169-20 had to be thinking, "Here we go again."

But Estancia's opening play was merely an illusion.

Tularosa bottled up and corked Estancia's high-powered option offense and the result was a thrilling 28-27 upset victory by the Wildcats over the second-ranked Bears on a warm, late summer night at Wildcat Stadium.

As a matter of fact, after Mendez's long jaunt, Estancia managed just 14 yards of total offense for the remainder of the first half.

As it turned out, Tularosa (2-1) was the team with the nearly unstoppable ground game. The Wildcats, led by bruising junior fullback Louis Vigil's relentless 145-yard output, rolled up 240 rushing yards for the game. …
