During the months of March, April and May, more than 1,700 dogs and cats in Valencia County landed in animal control shelters. Of those, 62 were reclaimed by their owners, 88 were adopted, and more than 1,500 were put to death, according to Shelly Anzara of the Valencia Valley Kennel Club.

"It's obscene, the number of animals that are brought in and euthanized because there's no place to keep them," said Judy Babcock of the Bosque Farms Rodeo Association.
