LANL Building Center To House New Computer.

LOS ALAMOS A steel frame is rising on the Department of Energy's new Strategic Computer Center at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

The $62.5 million, 291,000-square-foot facility is expected to be operating in early 2002.

More than 1,600 tons of steel will be required to form the superstructure of the center, which will house a computer capable of performing 30 trillion operations per second.

The computer and associated research activities will support the lab's stockpile stewardship program, under which scientists predict changes in safety, reliability and performance of nuclear weapons by measuring the materials that make up the weapons. …
