New Mexico has to 'go that extra mile'.

Convention centers find interest rising

Albuquerque attracted twice as many meeting planners as ever before 90 guests to its after-hours client shindig at the Orlando, Fla., Hard Rock Cafe last month. The event, part of a national trade show, was intended to woo conventions to the Duke City.

The good turnout may have been due to the headliner band, the Pink Flamingos, or the popular venue. But Ed Pulsifer, vice president of convention sales and marketing for the Albuquerque Convention and Visitors Bureau, says interest in Albuquerque and New Mexico is on the rise.

"But we have to go that extra mile," Pulsifer said. "When you say San Francisco or New York, people get a visual image. But when you say Albuquerque, they generally have no perception. However, they are very intrigued by it."

The annual Orlando American Society of Association Executives is a national trade show where destinations strut their stuff, discuss what their cities have to offer and try to persuade association execs to schedule their huge gatherings at their convention centers. …
