The loss of the Dukes, a Triple-A baseball team, to Portland, Ore., has created a dilemma for people who want to keep professional baseball in town, especially Mayor Jim Baca.

Restoring the level of baseball Albuquerque has enjoyed for close to 30 years one step below the majors requires a better stadium. The league made that clear.

But convincing voters to pay for a new stadium, finding a place for it, fighting the people who live near the chosen spot face it, these days that's a given and constructing it will take time, possibly a few years.

During that time, the Duke City would be without professional baseball.

The Western Baseball League, which is not affiliated with Major League Baseball, has offered to field a team at the existing Albuquerque Sports Stadium. …
