Art To Go in Either Frenchy, De Vargas Parks

A monument proposed for Santa Fe to commemorate the historic Camino Real is nearing the final stages of preparation before work can begin.

One thing yet to be decided, though, is its location should the monument be planted close to Downtown Santa Fe at De Vargas Park or along Agua Fria Street at Frenchy's Field?

And so begins the debate.

Frenchy Field supporters say Downtown has its share of monuments and markers of Santa Fe history, and city neighborhoods west of St. Francis Drive are seldom the recipients of cultural landmarks.

On the other side, De Vargas Park proponents say the monument would be more appropriate in the Downtown area, which is promoted as a haven of historic character. …
