IAIA Deals With Financial Strife.

Last September, the news that Santa Fe's Institute of American Indian Arts would lose roughly half of its federal funding set off weeks of meetings and hours of combing budgets, focusing on whether the school could survive without.

"We had to do it immediately," IAIA President Della Warrior said. "We already had contracts. We didn't want to reduce staff."

Within three weeks, school officials had decided where to apply the knife, eventually pruning the budget by 20 percent. A lot of older equipment wouldn't be replaced. Offices would be cleaned every seven days instead of every other day. Many vacant staff positions would have to wait to be filled.

Last week's news that the school would receive $4.125 million in the coming fiscal year, pending approval of the House, Senate and President Clinton, provided "breathing room," according to Warrior. …
