"The Power of Gold: The History of an Obsession" by Peter L. Bernstein

John Wiley, $27.95, 407 pp.

Some CEOs, I have heard tell, manufacture their memoirs and advice books like appliances, to set on the mahogany desk in glossy jackets and hand out as one-upmanship business cards.

The CEO's photo is large and smiling on the back cover, and the ghost writer's name is in small print.

Good business books are an odd lot. Some are interesting and anecdotal: Sam Walton's memoirs, for instance, sold well, even to college students. Some are very technical.

This one is almost in the middle.
