Michael A. Thomas' second comic novel, "Ostrich," probes the relationships between humans and animals.

But it is hardly a sequel to Thomas' first work of fiction, the 1988 comic novel "Crosswinds." That was about a young guy in the fictional Southeast New Mexico town of Dona Ciega who is struggling to make sense of his life.

"Ostrich," which is set in Nevada, is about the collapsing world of aging sheep rancher Sabine Eckleberry. …
