Making the Jonson Gallery more accessible to the University of New Mexico community could start with something as simple as unlocking the front door, said new gallery director Robert "Chip" Ware.

The upstairs door of the house that contains the downstairs gallery has long been locked because of security concerns. Visitors to the building at 1909 Las Lomas NE must go to the basement door in the back and ring a bell for admittance.

"What that does is it closes (you) off from the rest of the university," said Ware in a recent interview. "A lot of people don't even know we're here. I want to open the door as a symbol of opening our hand to the university, as a symbol of increased visibility. …
