Alameda artist Linda Dabeau lets go of the comfort of the gallery to pursue other ideas

Nationally recognized Alameda sculptor Linda Dabeau plays the role of storyteller with her recently installed "Los Vecinos" bronze at the Los Vecinos Community Center in the village of Tijeras.

The east face of Dabeau's free-standing relief sculpture depicts the history of prehistoric migrations of Native American people, the nearby pueblo settlement, the historic Spanish conquest and the rugged pioneer travelers who passed through Tijeras Canyon.

Dabeau said she put together a capsule of the area's history in relief form after doing background research and interviewing Fred Rael of the East Mountain Community Association, whose family has lived in the Tijeras area for generations.

She describes the opposite side of the sculpture as a unique balanced design incorporating images from current community center programs including dance, the arts, basketball, football and theater. …
