Lobos Barely Avoid Being Cut Down by the Lumberjacks

Forget the Psychic Hotline, call Rocky Long.

The University of New Mexico football coach proved prophetic Saturday night as Northern Arizona, just as Long had predicted, gave the Lobos quite a scare before UNM's defense again came to the rescue in a 35-28 victory.

Cornerback Walter Bernard and defensive end Brian Johnson had crucial fourth-quarter interceptions to help the Lobos (2-3) pull away in front of 21,553 homecoming fans at University Stadium.

"I told everybody it was going to be a close game; they're an awful good football team," Long said, heaping praise upon NAU. "It doesn't matter how it looks; a win's a win."

Two nemeses the Lumberjacks (2-1) and the third quarter made the game uncomfortable for UNM. …
