Gov. Gary Johnson said he decided to go ahead with a $940,000 renovation of the governor's private residence in Santa Fe because the living space is just plain inadequate.

Johnson said he has been unable to invite visiting heads of state or other dignitaries to stay overnight because the configuration of the private quarters at the New Mexico Governor's Mansion offers them no privacy.

"It would have been nice to ask George W. Bush to come when he's been in the state or Al Gore or Madeleine Albright," Johnson said as he took reporters on a tour of his private state digs.

The small guest bedroom, furnished with a full-size bed, is next to the master bedroom used by Johnson and his wife, Dee. The Johnsons' two children, now off at college, have occupied two other small bedrooms down the hall. …
