Church Owns Most of Land on Which Fundamentalists Live.

HILDALE, Utah, and COLORADO CITY, Ariz. Almost all the big homes in these adjoining border towns are built on land belonging to a private trust called the United Effort Plan.

The trust is administered by leaders associated with the local Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. And it is believed to be under the direct control of church leader Rulon Jeffs.

Ongoing attempts in the 1990s to throw some apostate, former church members out of their houses, off the land and essentially out of town ended up in the Utah Supreme Court. …
