Dressage Is a Lot More Than Top Hats.

I still remember a sports page comment four years ago about an Olympic dressage rider "wearing a top hat and tails." I've been musing about a response. This is my chance.

I took the reporter's remarks to be derogatory and dismissive of dressage as a sport (I've forgotten the exact words). And they were. But from here it seemed to be a display of ignorance of horse sports. The writer didn't understand it, nor did he attempt to enlighten himself, or his readers.

Yes, a dressage rider does wear formal attire a top hat and tails (a shadbelly) suitable for the ultimate international Olympic competition. …
