* Regional event to draw participants from nine-state area

Santa Fe is doing its part to boost the popularity of the sport of fencing.

The city and St. Michael's High School play host this weekend to the 16th annual New Mexico Open, an event that draws participants from a nine-state area, organizers said.

Tournament director Rob Madril, a St. Michael's fencing instructor, said Thursday he expects about 150 competitors more than 50 in foil, 60 in epee and 30 in sabre and cadet foil.

The sabre and cadet foil sections have grown the most over the years, Madril said. The cadet event, begun three years ago at the open, includes fencers age 17 and younger. …
