Wrecks At Big I Decrease.(Metro & New Mexico)

Aug. Accidents Down 303 Over Last Year

Traffic accidents in the Big I vicinity decreased more than 40 percent in August, compared to the same month a year earlier.

According to numbers released by the Albuquerque Police Department, 380 accidents occurred in the area bounded by Comanche in the north, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the south, Carlisle in the east and 12th in the west. That compared to 683 accidents in August 1999.

"We are actively trying to reduce accidents on the Big I, but we didn't realize the numbers would be that dramatic. It's kind of impressive, really," said Allan Whitesel, the Big I project director for the State Highway and Transportation Department. …
