Del Norte Cruises Past the Bulldogs

LAS CRUCES The La Cueva Bears upset fifth-ranked Mayfield 24-21 on Friday night in a high school football game at the Las Cruces Public Schools' Sports Complex.

Mayfield (3-1) broke the ice, thanks to Alex Bernard's 2-yard touchdown run early in the first quarter.

The Bears (2-1) answered late in the opening quarter on a 29-yard run by senior running back Erik Fuller.

Fuller finished with 104 yards rushing on 21 carries.

The rest of La Cueva's points came at the hands and feet of quarterback Matt Keeran.

Early in the second quarter, he threw a 37-yard strike to tight end Bryce Deremer. Keeran's extra-point kick was good, giving the Bears a 14-7 lead.

Mayfield tied the score in the third quarter as quarterback Adam Riggers tossed an 8-yard pass to Joseph Suter. The extra-point kick was good.

The Bears answered Mayfield's call as Keeran scored on a 2-yard run with 4:53 left in the third quarter.

Late in the fourth, Keeran gave the Bears some insurance as he booted an 18-yard field goal.

The Trojans would get another touchdown, but it wasn't enough. …
