Q: I have had some houseplants outside all summer. When should I bring them in to make sure they do not freeze?

A: Although the average first-frost date in Albuquerque's Northeast Heights is still almost a month away, it is best to bring houseplants back inside well before that date, which is Oct. 21.

Sometimes the frost comes several days before the average date, and in higher elevation areas and areas close to the river the frost is expected earlier.

Most houseplants are tropical plants, and some cannot stand temperatures lower than 40 degrees without damage. Therefore it is best to bring them in now while nighttime temperatures are still rather warm. …
