Many in Favor of Baseball Team, But Only a Third Support Levy

Baseball supporters could face a tough job convincing voters to increase taxes for a new stadium, even though a slim majority says Triple-A baseball is important to Albuquerque, a Journal poll indicates.

Fifty-eight percent of city voters surveyed said they would oppose a nine-month, half-cent sales tax to pay for a new baseball stadium.

"If the election were held tomorrow, I don't think it would pass," said Brian Sanderoff, president of Research & Polling Inc., which conducted the survey.

But Mayor Jim Baca said supporters are up to the task. …
