As its name suggests, the American Shakespeare Project has a penchant for presenting works by the Bard.

But its new production isn't.

Tonight the Albuquerque company opens a production of Christopher Marlowe's "Edward the Second." Marlowe was an Elizabethan contemporary of Shakespeare.

Edward II is a homosexual king, who inherits his father's throne.

His nobles and his wife, Isabella are upset that their king has taken a male, whose name is Gaveston, as his lover.

The story revolves around the nobles' efforts to kill Gaveston and the king's vow of revenge on them, said Michael James Schneider, who is making his directorial debut. …
