Musicians revive Italian tradition.(Top Billing)

Serenata translates from the Italian as "serenade," and that word captures the essence of what the duo of guitarist Beppe Gambetta and mandolinist Carlo Aonzo do.

What Gambetta and Aonzo have done is to recreate the popular music of turn-of-the-century Genoa, Italy.

"It's a project I started with Carlo many, many years ago," Gambetta said.

"For some reason the music was totally forgotten in Italy. No one played it anymore, though in that period it was important and expressed the great genius of composers."

Gambetta said he and Aonzo began researching the pieces and then playing them for fun. …
