Teacher Shortage Could Be Worse Than Estimated.

New Mexico's teacher shortage will be three times more severe than predicted as retirements and other factors drain the pool of educators, according to a new report.

The report, compiled by Peter Winograd, University of New Mexico director of teacher education, also shows that a growing number of teachers don't have full certification.

Winograd presented his figures Thursday at a conference of the K-16 Partnership to Promote Quality Learning.

Past estimates of the teacher shortage hovered around 500 a year. Winograd predicts a shortage of 1,500 teachers a year over the next five years.
