Tafoya's Drive Fails For Lack of Evidence

Serving as his own attorney and sole witness, Rio Arriba County Commissioner Ray Tafoya tried to convince a judge Thursday that his petition drive for a grand jury investigation was not just a political attack against the other two commissioners.

State District Judge Michael Vigil quashed the grand jury investigation over alleged misappropriation of county road funds. Vigil said Tafoya hadn't presented evidence of criminal wrongdoing that a grand jury could investigate. The grand jury was set to convene Sept. 29.

Tafoya had claimed both commissioners had used road repair funds for private projects in their district, such as church parking lots or paving roads to friends' driveways. …
