District Takes Action To Give Higher Raises

Mail carriers, bookkeepers, grant writers and accountants are out of work.

In all, more than 20 people lost their jobs so other Santa Fe Public Schools employees could earn better wages.

"They were positions that were important," Superintendent Veronica C. Garcia said at Tuesday's board meeting when details of the $1.8 million in cuts needed to provide the raises were announced.

Even the person who delivered mail from school to school is gone. "We'll have to pick up and sort our own mail," Santa Fe High School Principal Fabian Chavez said Thursday.

It was "somewhat of a kamikaze, radical move," Garcia said Tuesday of the budget cuts. …
