'Woman of the Year' Recognized in 1986

Jeanne Popejoy Smith was involved in education like her famous father, longtime University of New Mexico president Thomas L. Popejoy Sr.

Besides being an effective teacher, she was successful in business. The Albuquerque Business and Professional Women named Smith "Woman of the Year" in 1986.

Smith died Saturday of complications from Alzheimer's disease. She was 72, the same age as her father when he died in 1975 of the same disease.

A memorial service will be held tonight at 7:30 at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, 601 Montano NW.

When Smith joined the Albuquerque business women's group in 1972, women weren't as active in the business world as they are today, said Mary Loy, a past board member of the national Business and Professional Women's group. …
