Albuquerque High Turns Back Gallup

SANTA ANA PUEBLO Cibola must have been doing a lot of praying to the wind gods.

At the New Mexico Soccer Tournament Complex, the Cougars boys (4-5-1, 1-0 in District 1AAAAA) took advantage of a stiff wind at their backs in the first half and went on to upset Rio Rancho 3-2 on Thursday in district play.

With gusts at a minimum exceeding 40 miles an hour, Rio Rancho (5-3, 1-1) was stuck for much of the beginning of the match on defense as its clearing kicks often would literally stop in mid-air and come back on the Rams.

Jumping to a 2-0 lead, Cibola's Johonniuss Chemueno and Mike Erwin got two quick goals, seven and eight minutes into the first half, as Rio Rancho fought the elements as much as it did the Cougars. …
