Screenwriter shares tricks of her trade

If Melinda Snodgrass is in front of her TV, it's probably for "West Wing" or "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."

"There is much better writing on TV than in the movies," she says. " 'NYPD Blue,' 'The Sopranos,' 'Law and Order.' I don't have time to watch all the very fine drama that's being done and it's just getting better."

And there's always room for more. Snodgrass is generous with advice to writers wanting to publish or break into Hollywood.

First, she says, scripts are more lucrative.

"You'd better produce a book a year if you're going to be a novelist. …
