As Aquifer Drops, Eyes Turn to River

New research shows ground-water levels declining up to 2 feet a year in some parts of Albuquerque, confirming earlier predictions, Mayor Jim Baca and others said Thursday.

The research highlights the urgency of protecting Albuquerque's San Juan-Chama water rights, which should allow Albuquerque residents to drink treated river water by 2005, Baca said at a news conference.

A system of 20 monitoring wells installed since 1997 has shown declines in ground-water levels throughout the area, particularly in east Albuquerque, where the city historically has pumped most of its water. …
