*Farmers fear loss of two weeks will hurt crops

The irrigation season for farmers in the middle Rio Grande Valley will end two weeks early to ensure there is enough water in the river for the endangered silvery minnow.

"Most of the farmers will have finished irrigating most of their fields by then, (but) some won't," said Sterling Grogan of the Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District.

Lemitar farmer Glen Duggins said his chile and wheat crops could suffer.

"It'll hurt," he said. " They cut the water off early and whatever you plant in the fall could dry out if we have a dry winter. …
