* Neurological group develops a staff to care for Santa Fe and help in emergencies

As reports of Albuquerque's fraying medical system dribble out, a funny thing is happening in Santa Fe: The city known more for meditation than medicine is now a hub of sorts for brain surgeons.

Santa Fe will soon have four neurosurgeons in private practice; Albuquerque has two.

The University of New Mexico Hospital has its own staff of five, but the Duke City's private hospitals Presbyterian, Lovelace and St. Joseph rely on a staff half that serving smaller Santa Fe.

"We feel like we may have an increasing obligation to provide emergency care," said Erich Marchand, one of three Santa Fe neurosurgeons with Neurological Surgery Associates of Northern New Mexico, Santa Fe's only group of brain surgeons. …
