ABC Canvas sews a versatile tepee.

FARMINGTON Fifteen years ago when Jim Childress started ABC Canvas, the sign he posted on his building summed up simply what his company made.

"Anything Made of Canvas" the sign still says, and that includes tepees.

"All of our tepees are custom made. Most of our customers cut their own poles," Childress said.

ABC Canvas in Farmington is New Mexico's largest tepee manufacturer, producing 30 to 40 a year and not just for Native Americans who use the structures for ceremonies.

The company's customers include KOA campgrounds renting tepees by the night, European tourists who take a tepee home as a piece of the American West, and people who live in tepees or just like to look at them. …
