Swimmers To Kick Off 2001 With Cold Jump-Start.

A plunge in a 38-degree outdoor pool is an exhilarating way to kick off the new year, says Jim Cameron, a co-founder of the annual New Year's Day Polar Ice Party.

Cameron, member services director at New Mexico Sports & Wellness, which owns five area health clubs including the one where the event is held, said he started the party in 1997 because he thought it would be a fun way to ring in the New Year.

The event starts at noon New Year's Day at Riverpoint Sports and Wellness, 9190 Coors NW.

"You're simply electrified by the coldness of the water," Cameron said of the plunge into the pool's icy depths. …
