Residents and business owners in a west-side Las Vegas, N.M., neighborhood say the deep grind of a big engine is rattling their nerves.

That big engine is the Valencia Station, a 20-megawatt, diesel-fired electricity generating plant operated by the Public Service Company of New Mexico.

"It sounds to me like I'm living next to an airport," said Antoinette Fox, a resident in the neighborhood near the station.

Fox is spearheading a petition effort asking PNM or the city of Las Vegas to shut down the station until the utility company turns down the volume. Fox's petition also calls for the city and the company to address truck traffic carrying diesel to the plant.

The utility company says the station has been used more often lately and is looking at ways to address the neighborhood's complaints, said Julie Grey, a PNM spokeswoman. …
