Keep Council Out of Labor Negotiations.(Editorial Page)


Things are not going well these days in city labor relations. We have the years-long standoff between City Hall and the bus drivers' union. We have the infighting on unionization of mid-level management employees. And now, we have the firemen rejecting a contract according to the administration, because a city councilor is intent on sweetening the deal for the police union.

This is no way to run a city.

According to the city charter, elected officials are barred from interfering in labor-management negotiations. But, a giant hole was blown in that firewall when former Mayor Martin Chavez pushed a giant, one-time raise for police officers through the council. …
