Drug-Lab Closures, Beating Among Top Stories of 2000.

Police-related stories that grabbed headlines in 2000 included a police shooting of a man in Rio Rancho who subsequently committed suicide by gunshot, five methamphetamine lab closures and other drug cases.

One of the more controversial West Side crimes this year was the April beating of Rio Rancho school board member Joel Sherman.

George Haney Sr. and his two sons Robby and Courtney allegedly beat Sherman after Robby Haney discovered his mother, Robin Haney, and Sherman in bed at a third party's residence on April 1, according to police records.

As part of a plea deal, Haney Sr., 54, pleaded guilty to an aggravated battery charge last week in connection with the incident.

He and his son, Courtney Haney, 21, had been charged with aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, and other charges in connection with the incident. Courtney's charges are still pending.

Robby Haney, 18, is charged in Children's Court with aggravated battery and aggravated burglary.

Sherman, who said he needed about 40 stitches and had a 6- or 7-inch cut across his forehead after the incident, has denied having any kind of romantic or sexual relationship with Robin Haney. …
