Law Gives Santo Domingo Pueblo $23 Million, 4,577 Acres of Land

President Clinton has signed a bill giving the Santo Domingo Pueblo $23 million and about 4,577 acres to settle lawsuits over land the tribe claimed under grants obtained from the king of Spain.

The pueblo has argued it was the rightful owner of 52,000 acres near its reservation between Albuquerque and Santa Fe. The area includes shrines and other religious sites considered sacred by the approximately 2,600-member tribe.

"Not much to say except we are very happy that the bill passed and the president signed it," Benny Atencio, the tribe's secretary and spokesman, said Thursday. "We still have a lot of work to get the settlement finalized."

According to the bill, the pueblo has been asserting claims to lands within its aboriginal use area. …
